Installation Information:
- Tunnel fitment. In order to install a TKO into the tunnel of a 1964-1972 Chevelle, it is necessary to enlarge (cut) the tunnel. Each Classic Motorsports Group kit includes a replacement tunnel patch and template.

- Shifter location. For 1964-67 models, to achieve proper positioning within the stock center console, you will need to use the Hurst Blackjack offset shifter for Chevelles. This shifter will fit without requiring any modifications to your console. For 1968-72 Chevelles with a center console, the standard shifter that is included with the TKO will fit within the console without any modifications. The shifter needs to be set at the 16.75" mounting position to align properly with your stock console.

- Crossmember & transmission mount. You will need to relocate your existing crossmember so that it lines up with the transmission’s mounting holes. For Chevelles & GTO’s this involves relocating the cross member-to transmission mounting point approximately 1 3/4” rearward which can be accomplished by sliding the crossmember rearward on the frame rails. Also, for Chevelles you will need to "dimple" the top of your crossmember to clear the transmission torque arm boss.
Convertible GTO’s require further modifications to the crossmember frame rail brackets.
- Bellhousing & clutch linkage. Your stock clutch linkage and bellhousing will work with the TKO.
- Driveshaft. You will need a new, shorter driveshaft with a 26 spline slip yoke. A new driveshaft with slip yoke and ujoints is included with each TKO kit.
- Speedometer and reverse lights. You will need a custom speedometer cable that is compatible with the TKO as well as your stock speedometer gauge. The TKO also has a provision for an electric speedometer. An electric speedometer wiring harness or a custom speedometer cable with the correct speedometer gear for your rear tire size and rear gear ratio is included with each TKO kit.
- Clutch components. You will need a 26 spline clutch disc. Replacing your pressure plate and clutch disc at the same time is recommended.
We are confident that installing a Tremec overdrive transmission will be one of the best improvements that you can make to your Classic Chevy and your driving experience will increase greatly because of it. With this in mind, it is also important to understand that anytime you install non-stock parts, of any type, in your car, it is possible that things will not go exactly as planned and that some minor modifications may be required to your car or to the kit parts in order to achieve proper fitment. Because of slight variations on the production line when your car was built, past modifications to your car by previous owners, past accidents that your car may have been involved in, and after 30+ years of time on the road, each car is slightly different or unique in its own way.
We have made every attempt to make our TKO kits in such a way that no, or minimal, modifications are required and for majority of installations this is the case. However, it is important that you proceed with your installation knowing that, while not likely, some modifications other than those that have already been clearly stated, may be required.
While we are confident that you will be extremely happy with your new TKO overdrive transmission, it is important that you understand the potential realities with this install before you make your purchase rather than have you find out after the fact.
